ESOL grad gives back to the community
Senior Chenkang Zang is the only student in Montgomery County to receive the 2004 Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth on May 6.
Zang received the award for teaching other students how to play chess after school at the Long Branch Community Center. The award is co-sponsored by the Commission on Children and Youth and Gazette newspapers, He also received a certificate from the House of Delegates in Annapolis, Maryland.
Originally from China, Zang came to the United States seven years ago with little understanding of English. Zang learned to play chess in the United States from ESOL counselor Fernando Moreno. Moreno spoke no Chinese, but Zang is now an excellent chess player.
Now an ESOL graduate, Zang prepares to graduate from Blair as part of the class of 2004. He plans to major in Computer Science at Montgomery College this fall.
