Student hit at intersection of University and Colesville

Junior Ashley Lewis was hit by an SUV at 7:20 a.m. on October 9 while she was crossing University Blvd at the corner of Colesville Rd. She appeared uninjured; she was up and talking immediately after the accident.

With her was junior Maijya Winter who said she and Lewis, along with other friends, were on their way to school. Winter and the rest of the party were already on the other side of the crosswalk when they noticed that Lewis was still behind them.

"She didn't know the light had changed," said Winter, who had watched as her friend stepped into the street, got hit and fell onto the pavement. The speed of the SUV is unkown but Lewis believes the SUV was going "pretty fast."

After the impact, Lewis was helped to the sidewalk by her brother where she waited for emergency personnel to arrive. Lewis told the medics that her hands were burning and that her arms and legs were scraped. However, they determined hospital treatment was not necessary.

According to Lewis she recieved a citation for "unsafely crossing." Lewis disagrees with the citation because she claims, as a pedestrian, she had the right of way. She said, "It's unfair because I was in the middle of the crosswalk [when the light changed] so I had to make it to the other side."
