Blair girls' JV soccer loses to Wootton

The Blair girls JV soccer team had a rocky start to the season with a 6 to 1 loss to the Wootton Patriots on Friday, Sept. 3.

Wootton dominated possession time throughout the game. Goalie Margaret Sullivan had numerous beautiful saves supporting the defense that played hard the entire game. Sullivan cleared the ball many times, but the Blazers just could not get to the ball in time. With the ball constantly on the defensive side of the field, it was difficult for the Blazers to score.

"Wootton is one of the best," states Coach Roark, and that was exactly what the game reflected.

Blair's star forward, Allison Rubin, is fast, but her speed alone was not enough to beat Wootton's defense. Rubin had to get the ball on her own because Blair's passing was nearly nonexistent. Almost every time the Blazers had the ball, they turned it back over to Wootton.

The team roster was not finalized until a week before the first game, which made it hard for the girls to work with each other as a unit. "I think they'll get it together," says Roark. "It was kind of good for them to lose today."

In pre-season the girls had an undefeated scrimmage record, which made losing this game a slap in the face. The girls' next game is at Whitman on Monday, Sept. 14 at 5:00 pm.
