Blair Frisbee Club ranked fifth in nation

The unofficial Blair Frisbee Club was ranked fifth out of 84 high school teams across the nation by the Ultimate Player's Association based on its performance at the Fall Brawl tournament played on Oct. 30 at Sligo Middle School, according to junior Camden Lee.

Frisbee players defeated teams from Landon, Heights and HB Woodlawn/Yorktown High School in the competition, achieving scores of 15-1, 13-3 and 13-9 respectively, according to Lee. "We destroyed everybody," said junior Nick Mozer.

Junior Joshua Uzzell was less excited about the ranking results. "We got lucky," he said.

Co-captain senior Emily May believes the placement could be fleeting. "At the moment, it's a ranking that's going to change once we hit the spring," she said. Almost 300 teams are ranked in the spring, which is the main high school season.

Lee said the team is strong this year because only one senior left and many of the returning players practiced over the summer. "Most of the key players are back again," said Lee. "A lot of people improved."

Several club members said that playing against mostly adults in the Washington Area Frisbee Club (WAFC) this summer and fall helped them to defeat the other schools in the Brawl. "We were able to dominate [at the Fall Brawl] because of our experience playing with older people," said Mozer.

May said that Frisbee club members are committed and enjoy the sport. "We've got a solid group of people that come to every game," said May. "We've got a lot of people who are really fired up."

Lee said the players work well together and know their teammates' strengths and weaknesses. "We've developed a lot of chemistry," said Lee. "It just helps knowing how fast people are and knowing how far to lead them."

Conversely, junior Daniel Keller worried that not enough players, especially females, come to the games. The team must have at least two girls on the field at all times, according to a WAFC rule. "We only have two girls that consistently come to the games," said Keller.
