Wrestlers lose five straight

FEB 1, SPRINGBROOK HIGH SCHOOL—

Crushing their hopes finishing the season with an even record, the Blair wrestlers suffered a doubled defeat against both Springbrook and Sherwood high schools in a Springbrook tri-meet. Horrendous losses in both matches transformed the team's possible 7-7 record into a harsh 3-9 reality.

Coming into the match with only ten of the fourteen weightclasses full, two of which were occupied by JV wrestlers, the Blazers had a serious disadvantage from the get-go. Despite valiant efforts from juniors Scott Nguyen and Muamba Muanankese and senior Jacob "Moose" Johnston, the wrestlers failed to gain a hold on their opponents. Blair lost significantly to both rival teams.

Varsity 160 freshman David Ufford said that the holes in Blair's line-up contributed to the loss. "We never really had too much of a chance to win," sai Ufford, "especially since we had fewer people."

While wrestling Sherwood in his second match of the night, junior Hansel Cedeno suffered a head injury, causing a forfeit. Although Cedeno is improving, his future for this season is uncertain. If he is no longer able to wrestle, this would be a critical blow for the team.

The next match will be held at Blair on Wednesday, February 5 against Whitman High School: JV will compete at 5:30pm; Varsity at 7:00pm.
