The Blazers' varsity field hockey team pulled out their first win of the season Sep 22 over Damascus High School at Blazer Stadium, with a final score of 3-1. Despite excessive fouls by the Blair team, a stunning offensive performance led them to victory and a new record of 1-2.
Strong passes and aggressive shots throughout the game gave the Blazers numerous scoring opportunities, yet they struggled to capitalize off each possession in the circle.
The high spirit on the field helped the girls maintain Blair's all-sport home field winning streak. The Blazers' intensity may have been the cause of many penalties. In the second half, the team fouled over twice as much as they had in the first half, and a few goals were not counted because of fouling by both teams. Senior Amanda Wallace received a green card for a foul in the second half, but she continued to serve as a leading defender for the rest of the game.
Blair's passes were exceptionally good this game, according to junior center-back Sophie Strike, who contributed many excellent drives to the team's offense.
Blair scored immediately after crossing midfield in the first half, but did not score again until the second half. The team totaled eight failed shots for the game.
Blair's goalie, sophomore Anna Benfield, made a total of five terrific saves against Damascus' shots, but the team's general defense was not up to par according to coach Amy Miller. Miller seemed pleased with the Blazers' overall performance.
The field hockey team lost their previous two games to Quince Orchard and Paint Branch high. According to junior Amy Nguyen, they just had not played up to their potential in those disappointing games.
