Annual event successful in showcasing Blair's many offerings
The annual Blair Fair drew in staff, students and parents along the school's main hallway on April 22. Blair's many organizations advertised the successes of their programs by exhibiting student work and achievements.
Blair's Jazz Band, who performed numerous selections from the second floor of the middle staircase throughout the afternoon, provided the event's musical entertainment. In addition, English teacher Pamela Bryant sang soothing, jazzy selections in the SAC with the help of several band members.
Located in close proximity to Blair's language department were members of the Hispanic Club who kept people such as administrators Linda Wolf and Pat Hurley on their feet as the group blasted traditional music and danced with the staff.
Blair's Networking department also entertained attendees with a computer-controlled game of Dance Dance Revolution, which had onlookers cheering each contestant along.
The Science department lured visitors into the world of chemicals with such demonstrations using magic sand and nitrogen oxide.
Young entrepreneurs also contributed their time to the event as students advertised their merchandise, ranging from colorful picture frames to earrings and lip gloss.
Other programs in attendance included the Magnet and CAP, English department, Blair's various Academies, as well as groups such as the Japanese Club, Young Democrats, SGR, cheerleaders and MCT, the school's credit union.
Companies such as Phillips Seafood set up tables and made sure students were aware of their location in Downtown Silver Spring. Two representatives from Coldstone Creamery gave out chocolate, strawberry or French vanilla ice cream cups to those that donated $1 to Blair. Employees from Reliable Limousines attracted students with their "Free Limousine" poster, as they encouraged juniors and seniors planning on attending prom to enter their drawing. In addition, the company had several limousines of different sizes in the student parking lot to give potential customers an idea of the vehicles they had in stock.
Mary Kay also took advantage of Blair's upcoming prom and not only brought cosmetic and nail products to sell but distributed flyers concerning free make-up workshops as well. Also, a representative from Katie's Flowers Nature had flora on display, and a representative from Montgomery College exhibited course offerings, registration packets and bookmarks.
Aside from the free hot dogs, lemonade, slushees and snacks supplied at Blair Fair, the After Prom committee, which sold iced coffee and tea, bottled water, soda cans, assorted sandwiches, Jamaican patties, fruit salads and cookies, provided food distributed at the event, each item for no more than $2.
