Blair was recognized by Newsweek as one of "America's Best High Schools." Blair was ranked in the top 4% of all of the nation's schools.
State Superintendent of Schools, Nancy S. Grasmick congratulated Principal Phillip Gainous and called Blair "one of Maryland's shining examples of a school creating great academic opportunities."
According to Washington Post staff writer Jay Mathews, who compiled the list, schools were selected and ranked based on the Challenge Index. The Index determines which public schools have the strongest Advanced Placement of International Baccalaureate programs by taking the number of AP or IB tests taken by all students at a school in 2002 and dividing by the number of graduating seniors.
