Maybe magic is in the air or maybe the rain is giving the Blazers extra energy, because the JV girls' soccer team opened phenomenally in the game against Blake. Ten minutes and twenty seconds into the first half, forward Katie Scott made a beautiful shot over the goalie's head, which rippled the net and evoked cheers from the team.
Blake's center forward kicked off the ball immediately following the goal, but forward Susan Branson, propelled by the momentum of the first goal, streaked forward as soon as the ball left the Blake player's foot and stole the ball. Branson carried the ball up the field but Blake took it away.
Seconds later, Blair forced the ball back into the Blake half and this time Branson scores. Within the first 20 minutes of the game Blair is leading 2-0.
Blair managed to maintain the 2-0 lead over Blake for the rest of the game, despite numerous attempts by the Blake Bengals on goal.
Though Blair held off the Bengals, Blake got fired up after the first two goals and, for the most part, dominated the remainder of the game. "We got overconfident after the two goals," said Branson. "We weren't playing as hard the second half," Scott added.
Blair goalie Xenia Oroxom was faced with several challenging saves, but made every one. The defense worked particularly hard to help defend the goal. At one point center defender Anne Holt stood directly in front of the goal to kick away a shot.
The Blazers overcame not only Blake's tough playing, but also the rain to achieve victory. "It was a tough game because of the rain, but everyone played really well," said coach Summer Roark.
