New leadership program tries to groom youth

Students for Montgomery County's Future, a local political awareness organization, will launch a program for 30 to 40 current freshmen and sophomores from across the county in mid-January in an effort to increase youth involvement in future elections.

Sophomore Adam Yalowitz, president of Blair's Young Democrats Club, met Adam Luecking, the program's leader, while working together on Valerie Ervin's campaign for a seat on the Board of Education. A few weeks ago, at Yalowitz's request, Luecking spoke to Young Democrats in an effort to drum up support at Blair.

According to Luecking, the program seeks to teach local students about grassroots organizing, civic engagement and community leadership. Most importantly, students will learn about why the work they do is beneficial. "We want them to see how the decisions of government down to city council makes a difference in the community," Luecking stated. The program will involve participants in community service activities, which provide students the opportunity to receive SSL hours.

The program is looking for any interested students, especially those with some prior involvement in organizations dedicated to community and civic improvement, such as Amnesty International. The deadline for applications is Monday, Dec. 20.

For more information about the program and application process, contact Adam Luecking.
