Team record: 16-11, 7-9 conference
Coach: Frank Haith (16-11)
One of two new additions to the ACC this year, Miami has proved to be a pleasant surprise with wins over then No. 18 Florida and No. 24 Maryland, earning a very respectable sixth seed in the ACC Tournament, ahead of more heralded teams like Maryland.
Strengths:
Sophomore guard Guillermo Diaz is a very good player, cracking the 2nd-team All-ACC. Diaz is averaging over 18 points a game along with four rebounds and 2.5 assists a game. The best thing about Miami is that they seem to be the exact opposites of Maryland in that they beat the teams they are supposed to beat and don't shoot themselves in the foot. Basically, Miami seems to be a very well coached and disciplined team.
Weaknesses:
The biggest problem for Miami is the fact that they may not be as athletically gifted as the teams they play against. Miami is, of course, the premiere locale for college football recruits, but it won't be easy to compete with the well-established basketball programs – and therefore, better players – of teams like Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina.
