A peek into fall fashion

The leaves are changing and so is student fashion

In a big school like Blair, Blazers’ styles reflect its diverse student body. Walking through the hallways, you’ll probably see Adidas shoes, Carhartt jackets, wired earbuds, and dozens of jorts. But you might also see black maxi skirts, studded belts, and capri pants. The fall chill is bringing new life to student fashion, whether it be through color, patterns, or fabrics.

Some Blazers go bold, like senior Imani Mwamba, who loves to experiment with her style and wear a lot of unique pieces. “I don’t really put my overall style in one category” Mwamba remarks. “[My outfits] can be all types of things.” Junior Malia Parsons-Spittel is also imaginative, describing her style as “fun, colorful, and whatever feels good.”

Fall is the perfect time for these creative outfits. The frost gives Blazers the chance to wear all their favorite garments together. Sophomore Boris Todorov thinks it’s the best time to combine pieces. “You can layer without being hot or cold,” Todorov says. “I can wear a tank top and a flannel and not be cold or dying from heat.”

When asked about their favorite trends, Blazers jump right to shoes. Todorov has a definite favorite. “Skinny shoes. Tiny little Onitsuka Tigers, sambas, Margiela GATS,” Todorov says. “I don’t even wear them but it’s cool.” Fancy shoes also get lots of love. Mwamba has a love of kitten heels, and Parsons-Spittel adores Mary Janes.

A signature is the key to these Blazers’ style. Mwamba always accessorizes with a tie, Parsons-Spittel doesn’t leave the house without bead bracelets and her statement necklaces, and Todorov loves “any converse-esque shoe”. For junior Ashley Brazzell, her signature is her whole look. “I always like to wear flared jeans,” Brazzell says. “I don’t like to wear skinny jeans. I love wearing crop tops too.”

For Blazers who are experimenting with their fashion for the season, there are lots of options. Some suggestions include Thredup, Davril Supply, Amazon, and Depop. However, shopping on these sites can be lots of work. “If you’re going to go online, sometimes you have to scroll really far back on websites,” Parsons Spittel notes. “It’s dedication.”

Todorov’s method is to find high-quality basics. “That will last you a long time and you can add more things as you go,” Todorov says. “Then it gets versatile and fun.” Finding just a few pieces of clothing that he loves brings more life to his style.

Sometimes it can be daunting to try on a new style, for fear of judgment or failure. Fall presents the perfect opportunity to try something new. “Wear things outside of what you think people want to see,” Mwamba says. “Wear something that you feel comfortable in, something you feel cute in, something that you like.” There is no better outfit than one you wear for yourself.
