A flurry of treats

Transforming snow into scrumptiousness

Snow is a remarkable phenomenon in many ways: it allows sleds and skis to slide easily down hills, it cancels school and it coats the world in a gorgeous layer of pure white delight. But many people over the age of five tend to overlook that snow is also perfectly edible, as long as it's still white.

Although the few remaining piles of snow from the recent storm are no longer safe for human consumption, Silver Chips Online has compiled some great ways to transform the next flurries we see into delectable treats. So remember to set out that bowl for collection the next time snow is in the forecast and take a look at the recipes below.

Classic snow ice cream

Where would we be without snow ice cream? The classic sweet and creamy treat is always a go-to for those desiring to make something edible out of snow storms. The flavor is truly reminiscent of real ice cream - it's just a little lighter. For this reason, feel free to dish out extra large portions.

Prep time is about five minutes. Makes about two servings.

Kitchenware:
- large bowl
- spoon
- measuring cups
- teaspoon
Ingredients:
- 4 cups snow
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup milk, or until reaches desired consistency
Preparation:
1. Collect snow in bowl.
2. Add sugar and vanilla. Pour in milk until reaches desired consistency.
3. Stir lightly with spoon until just mixed.
4. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Snow cones
Although this treat is commonly associated with warmer weather, fresh snow makes a great substitute for crushed ice. With this recipe, you can use any kind of powdered drink mix to create your favorite flavor. When you are the mood for something syrupy and sweet, try these snow cones.

Cooking time is about 10 minutes. Chill time is about an hour. Makes about three servings.

Kitchenware:
- medium pan
- stove
- spoon
- refrigerator
Ingredients:
- 6 cups snow
- 2 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 package unsweetened powdered drink mix of any flavor
Preparation:
1. Pour sugar and water into medium pan on stove and bring to a full boil.
2. Remove from heat and stir in powdered drink mix of choice with spoon. Cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes.
3. Refrigerate mixture until chilled, about 40 minutes.
4. Pour over snow and enjoy!

Maple candy
If you're a fan of maple flavor, this simple, tasty treat will hit the spot. All you need is some maple syrup on hand (the real stuff works best). This crystallized, sugary snack may be too sweet to eat in large quantities, but it's great for sharing or nibbling at over a longer period of time.

Cooking time is about 10 minutes. Prep time is about one minute. Makes about four servings.

Kitchenware:
- small pan
- stove
Ingredients:
- 4 cups snow
- 1 1/2 cups pure maple syrup
Preparation:
1. Gather snow.
2. Boil maple syrup in small pan.
3. Pour hot maple syrup onto snow, watch it crystallize and then enjoy!
